Hello comrades, please join us for the fourth session of the Capital reading group on Wednesday, December 4th from 6-7pm over Zoom! In this session we are reading Capital, Chapters 9-11. For those who have acquired the new translation, this covers pages 273-307. Hope to see you there!

Labor Committee Statement:
Socialism is a movement of and for the working class, so it stands to reason that the interests of workers at work are fundamental to DSA's mission. Struggles at work - against wage theft, abusive bosses, unsafe conditions - are often some of the first points of friction people experience with capitalism. When workers organize together, then demand and win concessions from their bosses, they are enacting in miniature the class struggle through which socialism can be realized.

If we as socialists want to build a united working class movement against capitalism and imperialism, we can take inspiration from the very best of the "fighting unions". An ideal union joins people together and works productively through divisions to achieve common goals. DSA wants to do the same. The Labor Committee seeks to help people organize their workplaces with the Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee; educate our members about labor struggles and how they relate to our socialist goals; and build positive, lasting connections with the existing labor movement. We want more unions, better unions, and a working class with the skills and confidence to fight and win against bosses and billionaires.

This will be a special endorsement vote meeting of the general body of Pittsburgh DSA, requiring quorum. All members are welcome to talk and vote. Non-members can attend to observe.

We will be discussing a single topic at this meeting: whether the chapter should again endorse the No War Crimes on Our Dime campaign, with a referendum on the Pittsburgh local ballot in April's Primary Election. This campaign's first iteration (planned for the November 2024 General Election) was endorsed by the chapter in June 2024.

There will be a basic agenda to motivate the topic, answer questions, debate the topic, and then vote via a secret ballot. You must be a DSA member to access a secret ballot. You can check your membership status online (requires sign in). If you find you are not a member, please renew your dues. If you believe your dues are up to date but the site says otherwise, reach out to info@pghdsa.org.

A report from the endorsement subcommittee will be shared with the chapter at least 7 days prior to the endorsement vote for review. That report and additional information will be shared via this event page and via Slack.

Social media, email, textbanking, phone banking, RSVP forms, graphics... Comms Committee does a lot!

If you are interested in helping out with chapter comms, tune in to this meeting! We need people to do tasks (remotely!) like...

• write posts/threads on topics around special events (e.g. Native peoples' rights for Thanksgiving, trans rights and how they relate to socialism on Trans Day of Remembrance)
• create graphics to promote events (using the chapter's paid Canva account, a great skill to learn or enhance!)
• send text messages using a textbanking tool that makes sending texts fast and easy!
• make sure our Linktree lists all the upcoming events that are on our public calendar
• review materials and note where updates can be made to make things clearer

Join us for the Femmes and Thems Happy Hour. This event is meant to connect other socialists and get us talking about whatever issues we're facing, whether it's the state of reproductive and trans rights or just some work stress in our capitalist world. Happy Hour is until 6:30 so come on early for a good deal.

Note: this is not an exclusionary event as many women and non-binary individuals may have not realized they were that way until recently. However, many leftist spaces are cis-male dominant, so this is meant to be a space for others.

The Pittsburgh-Matanzas Sisters Cities Partnership is holding a critical meeting about the crisis in Cuba on Dec 18th at 6:30PM in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh DSA has endorsed the event and encourages all members to come!

Vice President, Lisa Valanti, and board member Dr. Mark Ginsburg will have returned from a nationwide delegation to Cuba (December 1-9, with National Single Payer Healthcare). They, with other PA participants, will be giving a first hand report on the crisis in Cuba resulting from the 64 years of U.S. - Cuba policy "regime change", the recent earthquakes and hurricanes, an ongoing islandwide power grid failure, the inability to access humanitarian aid, and inability to acquire parts for vital infrastructure repairs. All of this is impacting 13 million people and sparking a mass migration. There will also be a discussion on ways in which we can help.

They will present information on future trips being organized in the name of Senator Jim Ferlo and his selfless dedication to the fundamental rights of the Cuban people, and the 32 year Sister City partnership between the cities of Matanza and Pittsburgh, which is the only US city to have a Cuban sister city.
